Ein Pudding, der hat sich gebrüstet:
«Ich bin doch am besten gerüstet!
Mich schmücken Rosine und Mandel,
Ich habe Schokolade und Kandel.
Mich lieben die Großen und Kinder,
Die Alten -- die Jungen nicht minder.
Und Ritter und Nixen und Drachen
Und Fürsten und Könige lachen
Und freuen sich, wenn ich geraten
Und wenn sie zum Essen geladen.
Mich ißt man mit höchsten Genusse --
Und darum -- drum komm' ich zum Schlusse,
denn wär' ich schon vorher gekommen,
Hätt' niemand von euch was genommen.»
Kaum hört ihn die Köchin so reden,
Da ist an den Herd sie getreten
Und schüttet die Hinbeersauce
Ihm über die Zunge, die lose.
So endet' des Puddings Geschickte;

A pudding once loudly bragged:
"I am the best that you can prepare!
With raisins and almonds bedecked,
Chocolate and candles, bright and fair;
I adore both adults and the little ones
More, adults -- youngsters less so.
And knights and nymphs and dragons,
Princes and chuckling kings will know
And greatly savor, when I turn out well
And am presented at the feast,
For pleasure is that at which I excel --
And for this -- my remarks end, at least,
As I am borne high and brought.
Has anyone tasted of a finer trove?"
Not yet done, the cook then thought
To put the pudding on the stove,
And bathed it in a raspberry sauce
That the palate might sweet savor.
So ends the pudding's tasty tale;
Other dishes find in its favor.

An early work, Hans Bötticher, who adopted the now famous moniker Joachim Ringelnatz, with Ferdinand Kahn, published this amusing text in «Was Topf und Pfann' erzählen kann» (1910).
