Summerall March - (2024)

for organ

for Michael Varnadore

We enjoyed a pleasant visit to the Summerall Chapel, to tour musically its fine organ and carillon, which sparked this work. Our host was Michael Varnadore, chapel organist and carilloneur at the Citadel in Charleston. The building is graced with fine acoustics, in which the organ's many registers and choirs speak effectively. And so come this march, named after the chapel which itself was named after a school's president, according to some happy "limitations" which Michael and I discussed during that visit - meter, keys and general form.. The carillon tower, with its columbarium where some family friends are remembered, stands next to the chapel.
