Fantasia and Fugue in D major - (2019)
for organ
While working in alternation on two larger projects in the summer, each demanding its time and attention, I took a break from the longer arches of design for a smaller work. Improvising at a keyboard with simple closed harmonies of triadic harmony, the crawl of four voices with decorations sketched an upward succession, with then answering releases. Simple step-wise motion was the loose rule as these seven chords rise.
The fugue subject is derived from the theme of the fantasia, as the diatonic closed harmonies now are broken into melodic shapes end in the downward scale reinforcing the tonic of various domains. Little variations throughout extend the work.
