Im Weinberg auf der Höhe
Ein Häuslein steht so windebang;
Hat weder Tür noch Fenster,
Die Weile wird ihm lang.
Und ist der Tag so schwüle,
Sind all verstummt die Vögelein,
Summt an der Sonnenblume
Ein Immlein ganz allein.
Mein Leib hat einen Garten,
Da steht ein hübsches Immenhaus:
Kommst du daher geflogen?
Schickt sie dich nach mir aus?
»O nein, du feiner Knabe,
Es hieß mich neimand Boten gehn;
Dies Kind weiß nichts von Lieben,
Hat dich noch kaum gesehn.
Was wüßten auch die Mädchen,
Wenn sie kaum aus der Schule sind!
Dein herzallerliebstes Schätzchen
Ist noch ein Mutterkind.
Ich bring ihm Wachs und Honig;
Ade! - ich hab ein ganzes Pfund;
Wie wird das Schätzchen lachen,
Ihm wässert schon der Mund.«

Eduard Mörike
Eduard Mörike (1804–1875) was both a German writer and clergyman. He studied theology at Tübingen from 1822-1826, and served as pastor in a number of churches, though he wrote throughout his life, from studies to poetry to fairy tales. A leader of the so-called Swabian school, he is often ranked as second of the great German lyric poets after Goethe. Over 50 of his rich and varied lyrics, among them “Schlafendes Jesuskind” ("The sleeping Child Jesus") and “Auf ein altes Bild” ("To an old painting"), were set to music by Hugo Wolf, often called the "highest master of the 19th century art song." Mörike also wrote a novel, Maler Nolten (1832), and a distinguished novella, Mozart's Journey from Vienna to Prague which looks deeper into Mozart's personality than many lengthier studies. Later poets, such as Theodor Storm, modeled their work after Mörike, becoming a friend to and correspondent with the older writer.
This is a charming little tale of a young man and a bee, set for a voice of medium range.
It is the bee which instructs the young man in love, in passionate octaves with suspensions nested between the top and bottom notes to accompany the vocal line.
