Carson's Pavane and Galliard - (2024)

for organ

for Carson Cooman

Composer and organist Carson Cooman had written with the interesting notion of asking some musical friends to utilizing these older dance forms anew, with the intent of use as concert repertoire for small instruments of historical interest. The little dances, then, are my take on the pavane and galliard, specifically for such limitations. The pavane in duple meter and a slow tempo employs basic harmonies to refer to our era, with some ornamentation written out. As he'd requested, what better title than this, referring to a musical friend of many years.

The galliard in a duple/triple meter is of faster tempo, as well as character would dictate. .
