A solo line in varying phrase lengths sings over a simple, common-tone chord succession (in the sense of the Schoenberg disticntion between progression and succession). The pedal line, like a plucked bass, punctuates. The C to E common-tone relation yields to am E to A flat succession as bridge to a return to the opening.
