Toccata and Fugue in C Lydian - (2016)

for organ

for Nico Declerck

Arpeggios beginning with the Lydian tonic lie over a long-lined melody in the pedals. With these arches in succession to louder dynamics, each cadences to reinforce the tonic after digressions to some non-harmonic colors.

The three-bar fugue subject shapes the tonic with the raised fourth of the Lydian scale allowing easy movement to the dominant tonal region. Among the episodes are again arpeggios as in the toccata colored in the major chord.

Several "quasi-cadenza" passages and shifts in rhythmic stress serve as fulcrums between sections, and the final coda is set up with parallel major triads after a restatement echoing the toccata.
