Suite for Flute Quartet - (2021)
Hearing an amateur concert by a local flute quartet in Charleston sparked the notion to compose a work for this ensemble, two flutes, alto flute and bass flute. The suite is a set of varying textures for variety, coupled to some rigor in the imitative counterpoint therein. It opens with a short solo statement for the first flute and then in imitation, introducing an accompagnata section.
This is followed by a caccia for all four flutes, marked allegro and in an ABA form.
.
As contrast, an andante follows, the theme exchanged between voices.
Then, a portion of the caccia is reprised and a bridge leads to a presto movement.
This is followed by another slow section in which the two top flutes exchange gestures, the second lightly more decorated than the first statement.
The work finishes with a fugue, the subject and answer and stretti according to traditional forms.
