Sonatina for Trumpet and Piano - (2010)
for Mutsumi Shimamaru
i. Allegro giocoso - [ 4 pages in score, circa 2' 30 ] Ex.
Written for trumpet in B flat, this light-hearted emphasis on parallel seven chords accompanying the trumpet theme whose head motive is the leap of the seventh colors the modern view of diatonic harmonies by further employing intervals earlier less emphasized. The up tempo theme is jaunty and gay.
ii. Adagio lirico - [ 1 page, circa 1' 45" ] Ex.
The slow movement is a set of rhetorical down-reaching lines for the solo trumpet over somewhat static chords and rhythms, followed by their inverse in a standard tripartite form.
iii. Contrappunto - [ 5 pages, circa 2' 05" ] Ex.
The counterpoint between trumpet and piano alternates in a lively 3/4 romp.
