Sonatina for Bass Clarinet and Positive Organ - (2018)
As musical sibling to another sonatina in a set for solo wind instruments and positive organ, this for bass clarinet and organ is in four connected movements.
The first movement is an adagietto with the bass clarinet from its lowest octave singing a melody of leaps and lyricism, with imitative gestures in the organ.
The second movement is a fugue marked presto, with players swapping some gestures and with caccia-like gestures.
A slow movement with minimalist, repetitive gestures and static harmonic rhythm in the organ allow a cantabile for the bass clarinet above..
A final romp in 12/8 with a nod to previous movements and themes shifts in rapid yet seemingly static harmonic motion until some abrupt distant harmonic regions appear shortly. The parts for both players are virtuosic as the prestissimo progresses.
