Prelude and Fugue in A flat minor - piano

Prelude and Fugue in A flat minor - (2011)

for piano

The prelude moves between minor and its parallel major at points, and the triple meter in the first phrases yields to one gesture of five beats, which becomes the meter for the following fugue. The flavor of the harmonic minor is but a taste in the larger natural minor colors for the opening.

The allegretto fugue subject in 5/4 moves from tonic minor to dominant, the leading tone now structurally prominent as it slips away from the tone of the prelude. Additional harmonic domains including a visit to the mediant major upset the expected common practice scheme, and ornamental filigree decorate small episodes.
