Partita for Oboe and Piano- (2022)

for organ

for Patricia Emerson Mitchell

Clusters and some light tonality underpin a jaunty oboe as an exposition of gestures begins, and then the oboe and piano share these materials.

The allegro yields to a lyric adagio, an adaptation of a romanesca harmonic structure, sweetly cluttered by some logical dissonances.

As polytonal colors fade, a simple diatonic scale appears as subject for a fughetta. Taken up as answer by the piano first in the tonic and then farther afield.

A long lined, elegiac melody at the largo replaces the presto tempo for a time, as the fast-slow alternation continues for additional variety..

Them what follows is a variant of a setting of three short poems by Mitchell, which are not herein published, now adapted to the solo oboe with accompaniment. The first begins in 6/8.

The second of these three is a three quarter time in the parallel harmonic minor.

The third is a return to the livelier 6/8, yielding to a simple waltz in 3.4 time.

The finale mixes elements from the opening with the little fughetta subject for an energetic conclusion.
