The simple tune is a Hungarian children's song for a dance. The short lyric reads: "Megy a gőzös, megy a gőzös Kanizsára. / Kanizsai, kanizsai állomásra. / Elöl ül a masiniszta, / Hátul meg a krumplifejű palacsinta. / A nagypapám Nagykanizsán lakik nékem. / Masiniszta bácsi nagyon szépen kérem, / vigyen engem el hozzája, / én vagyok a legkedvesebb unokája."
A rather humorous little image, "The steam engine goes to Kanizsa, to Kanizsa Station. The engine-driver sits in front, the potato pancakes sit in back." A different alternative lyric asks the engineer to take us to grandfather. Nagykanizsa is a town in soiuthwest Hungary. So the imagery of this explains the musical gestures at measure 23 and beyond, as well as the ritardandi.
