Fugue for Sevens

Fugue for Sevens - (2013)

for piano

Within a time signature of 7/8, the motif is seven as underlying metrical unit and as frequent use of the interval of a seventh. The inversion of a seventh, of course, yields the second as explanation for the opening gesture. The fugue subject itself is a set of falling sevenths across a two-octave range of the diatonic scale, two features somewhat unusual in contrapuntal literature. The counterpoint to the subject is mostly also made of parallel sevenths, as in the opening bass line and as at measure nineteen and beyond, reflecting the opening gestures of the adagio. Throughout the fugue, sempre delicato in intended.
