'Tis moonlight - (2015)

Emily Brontë

for medium voice and piano

'Tis moonlight, summer moonlight,
All soft and still and fair;
The solemn hour of midnight
Breathes sweet thoughts everywhere,

But most where trees are sending
Their breezy boughs on high,
Or stooping low are lending
A shelter from the sky.

And there in those wild bowers
A lovely form is laid;
Green grass and dew-steeped flowers
Wave gently round her head.

Emily Jane Brontë (1818-1848) was an English novelist and poet, best known for her only novel, Wuthering Heights, now considered a classic of English literature.

The setting is minimalist, an opening gesture setting the tonality, and then rocking gestures all rooted in the G minor tonic with its major seventh, the melodic lines of the voice and treble in the piano ranging over the scale. In duet with the voice, the treble in the piano is to be slightly accentuated.

The score is available as a free PDF download, though any major commercial performance or recording of the work is prohibited without prior arrangement with the composer. Click on the graphic below for this piano-vocal score.
