Prelude and Fugue in G major - (1997)
for piano
The cascades of major sevenths as the bottom note of these chords breaks with the traditional common practice harmonic structures and voice leadings, all the while remaining rooted in common practice tonalities. The phrase lengths vary asymmetrically as the prelude proceeds, with a quiet center section before a reprise of the opening gestures..
The prelude ends with a diatonic polytonality, clearly in G major. The fugue subject is a simple jog tune in 12/8, echoing the triadic gestures of the prelude now broken into arpeggios.
