Prelude and Fugue in F sharp minor - (2012)
for piano
A measure long ground bass underpins a set of like phrases divided 3+2+2. A slow continual crescendo leads to the double dotted reaction to the sotto voce opening. Some filigree rising an octave and restatement bring the simple prelude to its close, emphasizing the lowered second from time to time.
The fugue subject is merely a notated arpeggiation of the opening harmonic content in the right hand, a second voice adding to the texture. While the second measure seems as if an answer to a subject, the formal answer begins at measure 17 in two bar lengths. Four and sometimes five note textures fill out the fugue, a final cadence again touching the lowered second before its close.
