Prelude and Fugue in D minor - piano

Prelude and Fugue in D minor - (1997)

for piano

This two minute work is essentially a chromatic fantasy, in the form of a prelude and fugue. Its emphasis on the minor thirds forming diminished triads broken into arpeggios is the outward character of the work. Opening with a free cadenza to establish the minor tonality, the subject of the prelude begins immediately to break down that tonic.

The prelude ends with a widely spaced D minor, and the fugue subject which is based on the prelude's theme takes up the minor thirds forming diminished harmonies emphasized in the counterpoint. Each is basically an extended upper and lower neighbor function to some member of the tonic triad. The fugue subject wanders through many distant domains before returning to a final cadence in D minor.
