Prelude and Fugue in A minor - piano

Prelude and Fugue in A minor - (2011)

for piano

The nine-beat (4/4 + 5/4) ground bass as theme repeats, voices and other development added as successive statements pass. The generally closed form of the parallel triads is a part of the ground bass texture, setting it apart from the additional lines.

The top voice of the ground bass' triads becomes the fugue subject with some octave displacement, twice repeated and rising a twelfth. Among the episodes, at measure 21, the ground bass harmonies blur in octave juxtaposition. With as much chromaticism as the theme offers, the statements of the subject appear in only the tonic and dominant.
