On a Theme of William Hayes - (2011)
for organ
The theme is a short three-part round, as shown below. [ 1 ] This short meditation on the theme adds another, non-canonic voice in places, decorates the rhythms lightly, and heightens cross relations' colors where they are implied in Hayes' fine round. Throughout, the round theme appears in its three parts, holding the harmony close to Hayes' intentions. Harmonic elongation towards cadences allows additional reflections on that scheme.
The final statement juxtaposes the falling line of the original round theme against a rising line, leading to a bright last chord, perhaps as answer to this "prayer" of Hayes.
