On a Fugue Subject of Mozart - (2015)
for piano
for Michele Gamba
Looking through the manuscript of Mozart's London Sketchbook, one comes upon an incomplete fugue as the last entry. In his autograph on page 86 the subject is sketched on two staves of a open score of five staves, beginning in the bass, and then further notated for about twenty measures whereon it is not completed. The catalogue lists it as a "fragment." Mozart writes in Italian on page 1, "di Wolfgango Mozart à Londra 1764."
Using this theme and that development which is extant, I add introductory material, another voice in half notes to solidify the tonal implications as in measures 11 and further, and then carry the subject forward into several tonal regions with additional counterpoint.
