On Contrapunctus XII - (2012)

an essay for piano

The long-lined fugue in 3/2 time has a set of short-long feet as its opening gesture. For this decoration of that subject, I chose a short introduction and then a splash of fioratura above outlining the first in a chord progression which becomes linked with the short-long statement in the lowest voice, and recurs through the fugue. Two contrasting episodes break the motor rhythm, the second being a clear and piano statement of the B-A-C-H signature.
