On Contrapunctus X - (2012)
an essay for piano
The fugue for three voices which is tenth in the series from The Art of the Fugue begins with a quarter note gesture. For this decoration of that subject, the twelfth above is offset and then answered beneath by an octave leap in the lower voice; thus is the texture varied with light reference to the use of partials via mutation stops in organ registration. Not all the instances of the subject treated this way for understandable limitations of the keyboard and two hands, whereas a four-hand arrangement might more fully develop this. The tenuto after the first gesture is generally retained throughout this short fugue.
