On Contrapunctus VIII - (2012)
an essay for piano
The interesting fugue subject for the eighth is introduced by the quote B-A-C-H in the bass line, first of longer duration and then in a short gesture at the double bar. The fugue subject is stated in octaves at the outset with one interior voice. The answer which follows adds parallel triads as a new texture, and then various statements follow in several registers of the piano. At a number of instances, additional quotes of B-A-C-H are included in the counterpoint at the original pitch or in transposition. A final statement brings this essay to a close with the major third as answer to the more complex, chromatic counterpoint of the work.
