Trauermarsch for piano
in memoriam - Hartmut Steigelmann
A funeral march composed in memory of Hartmut Steigelmann, architect and artist, is constructed of simple elements, the left hand's repetitions undergirding the melodic arches developed above. While great myths speak of life and death remembered, our own far less mythic lives -- only by comparison -- are of equal proportion in ways of which the stretch of eternity takes seemingly little notice. But loss and sadness are shared between all, and this for the husband of my librettist, Susanne Paasch, is to observe such a last moment in life, with its "journey in night."
