Day - (2010)

Paul Laurence Dunbar

for medium voice and piano

The gray dawn on the mountain top
Is slow to pass away.
Still lays him by in sluggish dreams,
The golden God of day.

And then a light along the hills,
Your laughter silvery gray;
The Sun God wakes, a bluebird trills,
You come and it is day.

Paul Laurence Dunbar

For other song settings of this American's work in both dialect and standard English, please see the index for Dunbar.

Texts sometimes suggest varying degrees of complexity in structure as well as vocal and an accompaniment's gestures, and sometimes utter simplicity. This is of the later, for the two hymn-like stanzas sing to me as a hymn.
