Contemplations

Contemplations - (2013)

for organ

for Carson Cooman

Carson Cooman, composer in residence at Harvard's Memorial Church,  wrote me yesterday about a single manual instrument newly built by his friend, John Bennett, with two stops, an Italian principal at 8' and a flute of 4'.  Last year, I'd written him a work, Burdens and Fugues in D major. He inquired about a piece for this new instrument, praising the low-pressure and "gentle" chamber organ and specifically the principal. He wrote it was perfect for "very long-breathed lines and textures."  For this, Contemplations has been composed for him and for the instrument.
