Chromatic Cakewalk and Fugue - (2011)
for piano
The cakewalk, among the various forms of ragtime, involved dancing in light-hearted mockery of others, and such a cakewalk became high art in the hands of many. I thought simply to add another take on this delightful rhythm and treat it in the manner of an melodic invention and then contrapuntally. Just for the fun of it.
The fugue shares the infectious bounce of the opening, with a pickup added to assist in watching for the subject's entrances and answers, especially in the density of stretto appearances.
